Louis Tomlinson Buys Doncaster Rovers

Congrats Louis! I’m so happy and proud of you.

Louis Tomlinson and John Ryan

Louis Tomlinson has followed in the footsteps of celebrity football club owners such as Elton John and Delia Smith by announcing a deal to buy the League One side Doncaster Rovers.

The One Direction singer, who completed a deal to take over the club alongside the former chairman John Ryan, immediately launched a crowdfunding campaign hoping to attract £2m to bring Premier League success to his beloved team. It is thought to be one of the biggest crowdfunding initiatives launched in the UK.

“For me, this is all about the football, the community and restoring the excitement and desire to making Doncaster Rovers the most exciting club to play for in Yorkshire,” Tomlinson said. “I want to see the Doncaster Rovers supporters get the club the success it deserves.

“I grew up in Doncaster and have felt the love for football run through the town, it’s for that reason that I have a real personal passion to make Doncaster Rovers a success story.”

The Tomlinson Ryan Trust is putting in a six-figure sum as part of the campaign to show the pair’s commitment.

Tomlinson, 22, played for the club’s reserve side against Barnsley this year and had been close to a takeover before, but a move was twice delayed because of negotiations over image rights.

Ryan, 52, who ended his 15-year association with Rovers in November after overseeing the club’s rise from non-league to the Championship and their move from Belle Vue to Keepmoat Stadium, is likely to be the more hands-on partner.

He has also played for Doncaster, having brought himself on as a substitute in a 4-2 win against Hereford after the club sealed promotion from the Conference in 2003.

Tomlinson will hope to follow the example of Elton John, who became chairman and director of Watford in 1976 and presided over the most successful era in the club’s history. Although he has now sold the club, he continues to hold a significant shareholding and remains its lifelong president.

Delia Smith is the majority shareholder in Norwich City. During half-time of a match against Manchester City in 2005, with the club sliding towards relegation, she memorably grabbed the on-pitch announcer’s microphone and implored of the fans: “Where are you? Where are you? Let’s be ‘aving you!”

Many of One Direction’s army of teenage fans will not be able to offer their support to the crowdfunding campaign – donations are only accepted from people who are aged over 18.

Last month One Direction were named fourth in the Sunday Times Rich List of young musicians with an estimated fortune of £14m each and a combined wealth of £70m.

Ryan said it was an exciting moment. By setting up the trust, launching the crowdfunding campaign and putting in money, he said, “we are making it clear to Doncaster Rovers supporters and the general public that we are planning to give the club the support and resources it needs”.

Worksop Under 9s Meet 1D’s Louis Tomlinson

Footy mad kids from Worksop were treated to a special training ground experience thanks to Doncaster Rovers, and met a pop star as an added bonus.

Worksop Town Under 9s were invited to Rovers’ training complex, where they met the Championship club’s first team and One Direction star Louis Tomlinson.

The pop singer was training with the squad ahead of his Rovers debut in the Final Third Development League against Rotherham United on 26th February.

Tomlinson was only too happy to pose for pictures with the Young Tigers, while Rovers keeper Ross Turnbull handed over a pair of signed gloves to Worksop stopper James Bradley.

The training ground experience came as a result of Worksop Town Under 9s topping Doncaster Rovers’ Group Experience Ticket leaderboard last season.

They kicked off the morning with an action packed training session with the Rovers Foundation coaches, before taking time out to watch the first team training session in action.

The boys then sat down in the canteen used by the first team, to a lunch made by the Rovers chefs.

The highlight of the day was a meet and greet session with the professional footballers.

Andy Parnell, the Worksop manager, said the trip was even better than they’d expected.

“We would like to pass on our thanks to everyone involved in our visit today, including the players and staff, the boys had an absolutely fantastic time and the experience far exceeded any of our expectations.”

A spokesman for Doncaster Rovers heaped praise on the boys for their skills and conduct.

“Not only did you impress our coaches during the training session but you represented your club extremely well throughout the day.”

“A thank you also to the managers who helped organise the visit and to the parents who came along to support the boys. “

Louis fans give £13k to Bluebell Wood

Fans of One Direction heart-throb Louis Tomlinson have raised $22,222 – around £13,400 – in honour of the Doncaster lad’s 22nd birthday.

Scores of fans from across the globe made donations in dollars to Bluebell Wood children’s hospice as a gift to the singing sensation, who celebrated his birthday on Christmas Eve.

Fundraiser Amy Kathleen said: “Louis Tomlinson has done so much for fans and for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice so we, the fans, would like to give back – both to Louis and Bluebell Wood.

“We met our goal on December 22 and the donations have continued to come in.

“Thanks so much to everyone who supported the drive with donations, tweets and retweets, translating press releases, making T-shirt designs and all the other things you guys did to make this a success.”

Since shooting to fame as one fifth of the world’s hottest boyband, Louis has continued to support his local children’s hospice and is one of its patrons. Last year he was signed to Doncaster Rovers and appeared in a charity football match in aid of the good cause.

Louis said: “It was really important for me to support a local charity. Bluebell Wood is such a great cause and I’m very proud to be able to help them.”

After hearing about the fans’ fundraising, Louis’ mum tweeted: “Wow this is amazing and in Louis’ words, ‘Mum this would be so wonderful for Bluebell Wood!’ Thank you xxx.”

The hospice supports children with a shortened life expectancy by providing ongoing medical respite care for the child and support for family members.
