Boy band phenomenon One Direction performed two sell-out shows in one day at London’s O2 Arena as they launched their world tour on 23 February.

The five-strong group belted out hits from both of their albums, including Up All Night and One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks) to more than 20,000 screaming fans on the first date of their 117-date Take Me Home tour.

After the show, band member Niall Horan Tweeted: “I love you guys so much! Luckiest dudes on the planet!”

“We just played two sold out shows at the O2 Arena today! You guys are incredible!”

In 2012, One Direction went from virtual unknowns in the United States to undoubtedly one of the biggest acts in music, and it doesn’t look like they will be slowing down in the new year.

Following the success of their smash album Take Me Home, the British/Irish boy band will spend the better part of next year working on their 3-D movie, which Simon Cowell said will not only be “about the fans,” but will also follow their massive 2013 world tour, which kicks off in February at London’s O2 arena.

They have their first-ever headlining tour for Up All Night under their belts, but this time around, the boys promise it will be bigger and better.

“With the last tour, we didn’t expect it to be as big as it was,” Harry Styles said. “We never expected to do that many dates. I think we did 92 shows, and this time we are kind of preparing it for bigger arenas so we can make the stage a bit bigger. The whole show is bigger, and we’re doing, like, 101 dates on the next one, so it’s going to be a long one.”

One Direction did admit that they’ve already picked out their opening act but wouldn’t disclose the lucky artist. However, they did reveal who is on their dream list of tourmates.

“Celine Dion!” Liam Payne said of who he would want to tour with before rattling off the names of Bruno Mars, Pink and Kanye West.

Zayn Malik admitted that going on tour with Katy Perry ”would be amazing,” but hip-hop mogul Jay-Z tops his list.

“Imagine going on tour with Jay-Z,” Malik asked the group.

“Lads, I don’t think there’s much chance,” Louis Tomlinson admitted.

And while they might not get to go on tour with Jay, they are keeping their hopes up for a possible collaboration.

“I would love to do a hip-hop collaboration with Jay-Z,” Payne said. “I don’t know how to talk to him, though. I think he’s wicked. I love Jay-Z. It upsets me that we’re not cool enough, but I wish we could.”

Not so fast: It seems Liam already made the first move. Payne snapped a photo of himself with Jay at the Brooklyn, New York, stop of Justin Bieber’s Believe Tour, after tweeting, “Alssoooo my biggest news todayy i met one of my idols and couldnt even look him in the eye…”

Wonder if he asked him about that collaboration? Fingers crossed, Directioners.

British boyband One Direction have made U.S. music history after topping the 200 Billboard charts with their second album.

The group – made up of Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson – sold 540,000 copies of Take Me Home in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

It marks the first time a British band have seen their first two albums debut at the top of the American chart – after their first offering, Up All Night, secured the No. 1 position with 176,000 copies in March this year.

It also comes as the year’s third-highest debut behind Taylor Swift’s Red, which sold 1.2 million units its first week earlier this month, and Mumford & Sons’ Babel, which sold more than 600,000 albums in September in its debut week.

‘We just want to say a massive thanks to all the fans who have supported us,’ band member Harry Styles, 18, said in an interview Tuesday from London.

Take me home sold 540,000 copies in its first week

‘We can send tweets and thank them, but 140 characters is never going be enough to say how much it means.’

The album also debuted at No. 1 in the UK this week and is No. 1 in more than 30 countries, Columbia Records said on Wednesday.

The fivesome’s debut, Up All Night, came in at No. 2 in the United Kingdom last year; it was just released in March in America, where it hit No. 1 and has achieved platinum status.

‘We were a little bit nervous about how people were going to take it,’ 19-year-old Niall Horan said of the new album during tour rehearsals. ‘Everyone gets that second album syndrome.’

They say though they’re excited, they won’t be celebrating too much: ‘We’re finishing rehearsing soon and we’re going home to bed.’

One Direction, who came third on the UK version of The X Factor in 2010, is signed to Simon Cowell’s Syco label imprint.

In just a year, the band has become worldwide sensations, thanks to its feverish fans.

They released a book and have a 3D movie planned. They also made the cut for Barbara Walters’ most fascinating people of 2012 list, which includes New Jersey Gov Chris Christie and U.S. gold medal-winning gymnast Gabby Douglas.

One Direction says those experiences have helped the group mature.

‘We’ve been working hard. We’re starting to grow up,’ Horan said. ‘We’re still young, but we’ve passed the initial teenage years. …We’ve grown up quite quick in the job we have to do and we became a lot more independent.’

The group – which includes Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson – will launch a worldwide tour in February. They hope to work with Katy Perry and are still trying to adjust to the celebrity and fame that has taken over their lives.

‘I can see how it gets to people. I guess it’s quite easy to get wrapped up in it all,’ Styles said. ‘We do the same things every other lad our age does. We go out, we have fun, we meet girls and stuff like that.

‘Sometimes it gets written about, which, yeah, we think about it and it’s absolutely crazy. It’s still a bit weird thinking that that’s the way it is.’
